Revamp Your Post-Workout Skincare Routine with These Dermatologist Tips!

So, you've nailed down your weekly routine – from meal prepping to crushing those workout classes. But just when you think you've got everything under control, the mirror reveals a giant pimple looking back at you. Fear not, because we've got you covered with top dermatologist tips to keep breakouts at bay, especially for those who love a good sweat session.

1. Shower Right After Exercise

Sweat trapped in tight workout clothes can lead to acne and irritation. Showering immediately after a workout reduces the time for bacteria to settle and grow on your skin. Use an antibacterial wash for your face and body, focusing on areas that touched exercise equipment or where you're prone to breakouts.

2. Wash Hands Frequently, Especially After Working Out

It may sound obvious, but washing your hands after a workout is crucial. Gym equipment is a breeding ground for germs and bacteria that can cause acne and infections. Board Certified Dermatologist Joel Schlessinger recommends using a clean towel or your sleeve to wipe off sweat, marking one side designated for equipment and the other for your face.

3. Avoid Sharing Products

Sharing products with friends may seem harmless, but it spreads bacteria that can lead to infections. Dr. Schlessinger advises against sharing makeup, especially brushes, to prevent the transfer of bacteria that can cause health issues.

4. Wear Sunscreen Every Day, Rain or Shine

Sunscreen isn't just for blistering summer days. Dermatologist Joel Schlessinger emphasizes its importance year-round. Opt for SPF 30 or higher and ensure it protects against both UVB and UVA rays. Apply a nickel-size amount to your face and two tablespoons to your body, reapplying every two hours or more frequently if swimming or sweating.

5. Never Fall Asleep Without Washing Your Face

Skipping a quick face rinse before bed can lead to the spread of bacteria and aggravate acne. Dr. Schlessinger warns that sunscreen and foundation left on overnight can clog pores and accelerate the aging process. Make it a habit to wash your face every night or keep cleansing wipes on your nightstand for a gentle reminder.

6. Consider Cutting Regular Milk from Your Diet

While dairy is a great nutrient source, it can also cause acne due to natural hormones present in cow's milk. Dr. Schlessinger suggests trying almond milk, free of hormones, as an alternative to combat acne.

Incorporate these dermatologist-approved tips into your post-workout routine to maintain clear, healthy skin.

7. Wash Your Sheets Often

For those with sensitive or acne-prone skin, washing sheets weekly is crucial to avoid transferring bacteria and oils onto your pillowcase. Dr. Schlessinger recommends switching pillowcases or flipping them over between laundry days to prevent breakouts.
